Moving from Nashville to Brentwood: A Practical Guide

Plenty of families start out in Nashville proper, in a Midtown condo or a Green Hills townhome, and eventually head south for more room. Brentwood is usually where that road leads. It sits just over the Davidson County line in Williamson County, close enough that you can still be downtown for dinner, but with a very different pace once you are home. The move itself is short in miles. It is not always short in effort. Here is what we have learned about doing it well.

Know what you are moving into

Brentwood was incorporated in 1969, the same era the interstate came through, and a lot of the city was planned around space. Many neighborhoods carry one-acre zoning, which means long driveways, homes set well back from the street, and garages on the side or rear. That is great for living and a little more work for moving.

  • Long carries. When a house sits 80 or 100 feet from where a truck can park, every box walks that distance. We plan crew size around it so the day doesn't drag.
  • Driveway clearance. Our 26-foot box trucks stand about 12 feet 8 inches tall. Mature trees over a driveway, a porte-cochère, or a low gate can decide where the truck parks. Walk your driveway and look up before moving day, and tell us what you see.
  • Bigger rooms, bigger furniture. Sectionals, dining sets for ten, home-gym equipment and garage shelving are common in Brentwood homes. Mention them up front so we bring the right pads, dollies and hands.

Timing the drive on I-65

Most Nashville-to-Brentwood moves use I-65 South, with Franklin Road (US 31) and Old Hickory Boulevard as the usual alternates. Weekday rush hour on that stretch can turn a short trip into a long one, and that matters when you are paying by the hour. A few ways to keep it efficient:

  • Start loading early so the truck is rolling south before the afternoon rush builds.
  • If you have flexibility, a mid-week, mid-day transfer between homes is usually the smoothest.
  • Because JM Moving runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, an evening or weekend move is an option too. Some Brentwood families prefer a Saturday so both adults can be home.

Neighborhood rules and HOAs

Many Brentwood subdivisions have homeowners associations, and some have their own guidelines about large trucks, parking on the street, or the hours work can happen. These differ from one community to the next, so don't assume your old rules carry over. Before you book a date:

  1. Ask your HOA or property manager whether there are moving-day restrictions or a notice requirement.
  2. Find out whether the truck can park on the street in front of the house or must stay in the driveway.
  3. If you are in a gated section, arrange gate access for the crew ahead of time.

If you are leaving a Nashville condo or high-rise, you will likely need to reserve the freight elevator and a loading dock window on that end as well. Get both reservations in writing.

School calendars shape the best dates

Brentwood is served by Williamson County Schools, and a lot of moves are timed around the school year. Summer fills up fast, especially the weeks right before classes start. If you are moving for the school year, book early. If your dates are flexible, the fall and late winter tend to give you more choice of days and start times.

Packing for a house that will take a while to settle

Moving into a bigger home means you probably won't unpack everything in the first week. Pack and label with that in mind:

  • Label every box with the room it goes to in the new house, not the room it came from.
  • Pack a "first night" box for each person: chargers, medications, bedding, toiletries, a change of clothes.
  • Keep garage, attic and bonus-room items together so they can go straight to those spaces and stay out of the way.
  • Photograph the back of the TV and any home-office setup before you unplug it.

If you would rather not pack at all, our crews can handle full packing as part of the move. We will talk through what that looks like for your home on the call, since every house is different.

What it costs

Our local rates are straightforward: $250 an hour for 2 movers and a truck, and $350 an hour for 3 movers and a truck, full service. On local moves we don't add charges for one flight of stairs, elevators, travel time, fuel or tax. Many Brentwood homes are a better fit for a flat rate, and flat-rate moves start at $550 for a 2–3 bedroom home with 3 movers and $850 for 4+ bedrooms with 4 movers. You can see how those flat rates are laid out on our Nashville flat-rate moving cost page. Your exact price is confirmed on a quick call, because a one-acre lot with a long carry is a different job from a townhome with a two-car garage.

Storage in between

It is common for the closing on a new Brentwood home and the sale of a Nashville home to miss each other by a few days or weeks. If that happens, we can hold your belongings in storage and deliver when the new house is ready, so you aren't renting a second truck or asking friends for garage space.

FAQ

Is a Nashville to Brentwood move considered local?

Yes. It is a short move within Middle Tennessee, and we handle it with our local crews and trucks. We will confirm the exact pricing approach, hourly or flat rate, when we talk.

Can you move us on a weekend or in the evening?

Yes. JM Moving works 24/7, including weekends, evenings and short-notice moves. Weekends in summer book up first, so call as early as you can.

Do I need to tell you about my driveway?

Please do. Long driveways, steep grades, low branches and gates all affect where our 26-foot truck can park and how far the crew carries. Knowing ahead keeps the day on schedule.
