Green Hills Moving Guide: Traffic, Condos and Infill Homes

Green Hills is one of the easiest places in Nashville to love and one of the trickier places to move. You have the Mall at Green Hills, the Bluebird Cafe, good schools and quick access to I-440, all along a single busy corridor: Hillsboro Pike. Add a mix of 1950s ranch houses, new tall-and-skinny infill homes and mid-rise condos, and no two Green Hills moves look the same. Here is what to plan for so your move goes smoothly.

Where Green Hills is, and why it matters

Green Hills sits south of downtown, roughly bounded by I-440 to the north and Harding Place to the south, with Hillsboro Pike (US 431) running through the middle. It is in the 37215 ZIP code. The Mall at Green Hills is on Abbott Martin Road at Hillsboro Pike, with Hillsboro High School across the street. Lipscomb University and Harpeth Hall are close by, and Belle Meade is just to the west.

Nearly everything funnels through Hillsboro Pike. That's convenient for daily life but a real factor for a moving truck, because left turns, short merge lanes and mall traffic all slow a 26-foot box truck down.

Timing your move around Hillsboro Pike

  • School traffic is the big one. With a public high school, an elementary school and several private schools nearby, morning drop-off and afternoon pickup back up the side streets. Plan to load before drop-off or after the morning rush clears.
  • Mall traffic peaks on weekends and around the holidays. If your home is near Abbott Martin Road or Hillsboro Circle, a weekday move will usually go faster than a Saturday in December.
  • Evenings and nights are an option. JM Moving runs 24/7. Moving after traffic dies down can make a real difference in Green Hills, and it can help when a lease or closing date leaves you with a tight window.

Three kinds of Green Hills homes, three different moves

The classic ranch

Many original Green Hills homes are brick ranch houses on good-sized lots. These are often the simplest moves: one level, a driveway, and a clear path from truck to door. The main thing to plan is the driveway itself. Some are steep or narrow, and we decide in advance whether the truck goes up the drive or stays at the curb.

New infill homes

Many older lots have been split and rebuilt as two newer, taller homes. These usually mean:

  • Three floors of stairs, sometimes with tight turns at the landings.
  • Shared or narrow driveways where the truck can't pull in.
  • Fresh paint and new floors that need protection.

Measure the stairwell turns before you buy a large sectional or king bed frame for a third-floor bedroom. If a piece won't make the turn, it's better to know before moving day.

Condos and mid-rise buildings

Green Hills has a growing number of condo buildings near Hillsboro Pike. If you are moving into or out of one, contact building management early and ask:

  1. Do I need to reserve the freight or service elevator, and for what hours?
  2. Where should the moving truck park or load?
  3. Does the building need a certificate of insurance from the mover, and who should it list?
  4. Are there quiet hours or weekend restrictions on moves?

Send us the answers and we'll plan the crew and timing to fit your building's rules.

A simple Green Hills move checklist

  • Four weeks out: book your mover and, if needed, your elevator reservation.
  • Three weeks out: measure stairwells, doorways and the rooms in the new place for your largest pieces.
  • Two weeks out: start packing rooms you don't use daily: guest rooms, closets, storage.
  • One week out: confirm parking with your building or let close neighbors know a truck will be out front.
  • Moving day: keep keys, chargers, medications and important papers with you, not on the truck.

Moving within Green Hills or nearby

A lot of Green Hills moves are short: from a condo into a house, from a ranch into a new build a few streets over, or from Green Hills to Belle Meade, Forest Hills, Oak Hill or Brentwood. Short moves can still take real planning, especially when both homes have stairs or both sit on busy roads. Hourly pricing tends to work well for these.

How JM Moving handles a Green Hills move

JM Moving is family-owned, with more than 23 years in the industry and a home base on Charlotte Pike in West Nashville. For Green Hills, that means:

  • Planning around access. We talk through where the truck parks, how many floors we're working and whether there's an elevator to reserve. Your exact price is confirmed on that call.
  • Straightforward hourly rates. $250 per hour for two movers and a truck, or $350 per hour for three movers and a truck, full service. One flight of stairs, elevators, travel time, fuel and tax are not extra on local moves.
  • Flat-rate pricing when it fits your move better. Starting prices are on our flat-rate moving costs page.
  • Packing and storage if your new place isn't ready or you're between leases.
  • Long-distance moves on our Nashville to Miami, Augusta and Boston routes if Green Hills is your first or last stop.

FAQ

What's the best day to move in Green Hills?

A weekday, after the morning school traffic clears, is usually easiest. Weekend afternoons near the mall tend to be the slowest. Evening and overnight moves are also available.

Do I need to reserve an elevator for a Green Hills condo move?

Most condo buildings ask you to reserve the service elevator and may require a certificate of insurance from your mover. Check with building management early, as reservation slots can fill up.

Can your truck fit in a shared infill driveway?

Sometimes. Narrow and shared drives often mean the truck stays at the curb. We plan that ahead of time so the crew doesn't block a neighbor in.
